This year’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme has kicked off with a practice expedition in Northamptonshire.

The group of thirteen students from Years 9 to 12 spent a Saturday in September navigating the area near Wansford as they got into training.

This was the first DofE experience for some of the students who will be working towards their Bronze award while 6th form and last year’s Bronze students are working towards their Silver Award.

TCA’s DofE coordinator Lucy-Beth Heighton said: “The group are very enthusiastic and their prior knowledge of basic map skills was very good. Students took turns leading the group and navigating to particular check points. In addition, we had two Year 11 girls, Taylor Cordell and Alicia Baghdouyan who have just completed Bronze and moved onto silver. They used their experience to coach some of the new cohort and helped to plan part of the route we took.

“We have doubled our DofE numbers this year and are still expecting more to apply for silver from post-16.

Miss Heighton accompanied the students on the trip along with fellow staff Mr Tim Cobby, Mr Dan Hudson, Mr Nigel Glover and Miss Alex Malcolmson.

The Bronze Award students will be assessed in June at Rutland Water and the Silver Award students will head to Shropshire in July for assessment.
