Year 5 students from Elm Road Primary School visited TCA for a day of activities themed around the poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes.

The poem, set in 18th century England, tells the story of a highwayman who is in love with Bess, an innkeeper’s daughter. Betrayed to the authorities by Tim, a stableman, the highwayman escapes ambush when Bess sacrifices her life to warn him. Learning of her death he dies himself in a futile attempt at revenge, shot down on the highway

The visiting Year 5s began the day with an English class led by Vice Principal Lisa Ling about the poem and then moved on to an art session with Emma Guppy, where they created artwork linked to the poem.

The Year 5s finished the day with a drama class led by Julie Wilcox. During the class they were split up into groups and drew storyboards of six scenes from The Highwayman, before acting them out as still images themselves.
