Our Year 10 and 11 scientists visited the Cavendish Laboratory, the home of Cambridge University’s physics department for a special ‘Physics at Work’ event where they carried out lots of practical experiments. They were given a guided tour and introduced to some of the groundbreaking work and research that has taken place there since it opened in 1874.

The students were accompanied by librarian Mrs Trafford and Head of Physics Mr Cobby who said: ‘This was a great opportunity for our students to see one of the great scientific institutions in the UK where many leading researchers and scientists have studied. The students had some activities during the day. They made model aeroplanes and had to get level flight by manipulation of the nose and wings. They did all sorts of other activities such as seeing dynamite being blown up in slow motion using one of the fastest camera on the planet. There were lots of interesting activities and the students came back enthused and with a greater knowledge of how physics can be applied in real life situations.’
